Wolf Creek Ski Area is one of the last vestiges of old Colorado, a family-run, rustic, relaxed ski area with tons of powder and no pretense.
Not surprisingly, a Texas developer took one look at the stunning spot and decided to build a massive resort village nearby — one that could bring in as many as 10,000 people, over roads incapable of handling that amount of traffic, into a remote area lacking in infrastructure. Red McCombs’s $1 billion plan for Wolf Creek was so ambitious that the the county, the state and the feds launched study after study. The developer’s application for the next environmental review was due December 31.
It didn’t come. And so the U.S. Forest Service just announced that it is officially considering the project over. If McCombs wants to submit an application in the future, the feds “will evaluate and consider the next steps at that time.”
But right now, it’s a great time to head for Wolf Creek Pass and some classic Colorado skiing.
