On February 17, fans heading to Leven Supply found the doors locked, with a note that the State of Colorado had seized the Wash Park market/deli over unpaid taxes. The action did not affect Leven Deli, the Golden Triangle hot spot whose owners had opened Leven Supply last year, expanding their reach as well as their offerings by adding pizza and wine suppers.
“We’re dealing with an unfortunate situation resulting from a former third-party accounting contractor mishandling Leven Supply’s sales tax filings and payments. That contractor is no longer working with us, and since discovering the issue, we have been actively working with the city and the state to resolve it,” those owners posted on social media. “We appreciate the community’s patience and support, and we will share updates on Leven Supply as they become available. We want the community to know we are paying our employees today and going forward while we work diligently on reopening.”
In their comments on the Westword Instagram, readers chewed over the situation, with many taking the opportunity to bite into the prices and policies at the original Leven Deli. Here’s a taste:
Very disappointing! Leven Supply has been such a great addition to the neighborhood!
With a 10 percent service charge on top of $20 sandwiches, this surprises me ZERO percent. I feel bad for these employees. They work their butts off.
Makes you wonder where the the 10 percent “quality charge” ends up!
Damn. For what they charge, them bills should have been paid.
This is pretty shocking considering a Reuben, chips and a Diet Coke cost $29 at the flagship store.
Ben Franklin: “…but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” On a personal note: that place is severely overpriced and mediocre at best.
They are the nicest people – owners and employees – and have the best food in the neighborhood, so I really hope things work out for them.
And in fact, things did work out…at least for now. After being seized by the state on February 17, Leven Supply was back in business on Friday night, having satisfied its bill with the state.
But some diners apparently aren’t satisfied with Leven Deli’s value. What do you think of the food? The prices? Have you been to Leven Supply? Post a comment or share your thoughts at editorial@westword.com.
