After risking her neck going undercover in South Korean and Thai brothels and subsequently charting the spread of sex slavery throughout the world, filmmaker Libby Spears knows a thing or two about human trafficking. But none of that prepared her for the revelation she ultimately uncovered — namely, that such exploitation, of children in particular, is not just a third-world occurrence. It’s reportedly rampant in North America, as well. That only makes the unfolding story of Jaycee Dugard — the subject of Playground, an eye-opening documentary by Spears — more poignant.
The director will appear in person tonight at 7 p.m. for a special screening hosted by Barbara Bridges and Women + Film at the Starz FilmCenter, 900 Auraria Parkway in the Tivoli Student Center.
