Several days later, John Singleton died of his injuries.
Singleton’s murder didn’t get much media attention beyond initial incident reports and our blog featuring memories about him shared by his wife, Maria Singleton-McGaughy.
But the case wasn’t forgotten, as evidenced by first-degree-murder charges just filed against Ricardo Soto, twenty.

MAN CHARGED IN HALLOWEEN SHOOTINGSDenver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a man in connection with a deadly shooting that took place in the early morning hours of November 1, 2009.
Ricardo Soto (DOB: 07-18-89) is charged with first-degree murder (F1), attempted first-degree murder (F2), and first-degree assault (F3).
The charges allege that in the early morning hours of November 1, 2009, Soto was involved in an altercation outside a nightclub that resulted in a triple shooting. Denver police responded to 4040 East Evans Avenue and found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. A third victim later sought treatment at a local hospital. One victim, 29-year-old John McGaughy-Singleton, died a few days later as a result of the injuries sustained from the gunshots.
Soto remains in custody in the Denver County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court, room 472W, on March 31, 2010 to be formally advised of the charges.
