Ted Kennedy died a year to the day after what was arguably his last big spotlight day on the American political stage — his speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver mere months after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Rewatching his address, it’s clear that an unexpectedly robust Kennedy rose to the occasion. His voice seems shaky and raspy at times, and his cadence can be a little strange. Yet even conservatives who loathed Teddy, or pop-culture buffs who could never see him as anything other than the personification of The Simpsons‘ Mayor Quimby, will likely concede that the talk retains its drama and emotion, particularly today.
