The friends and family of Marvin Booker gathered with supporters on Tuesday at an event commemorating the third anniversary of this death. Booker, a 56-year-old street preacher, died after being arrested and taken to the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center, where he got into an altercation with sheriff’s deputies; he had been wanted for failing to appear on a drug-paraphernalia charge. Booker’s family has sued the city, although there is currently no court date set for a trial. Attendees were asked to bring shoes that could be donated to needy individuals.
The shoes are symbolic to the family since the altercation began after Booker tried the retrieve his shoes in the jail, his family says.
