Red Rocks Elementary.

When I walked into Red Rocks Elementary (my polling place) at about 9:25 this morning, there were two or three voters there already — not even coming close to filling up the twenty or so booths available. Which meant I got more attention than I’ve ever had before at any polling place in my life. “Morrison or Idledale?” an election volunteer asked me. “Morrison,” I told him, while he and another volunteer helped me sort out my ballot and sign my name. They were falling all over themselves to help me!

As voter number twenty, I filled out the gargantuan ballot in my little booth quickly (with the aid of a cheat sheet I’d made last night and tucked into my back pocket), listening to the conversation of the volunteers with half an ear. They were discussing what everyone would have for lunch: Cuban pork sandwiches or macaroni and cheese? Glad I didn’t have to make that decision, at least. I stuck the ballot in my secrecy folder and made my way over to a woman in a pink sweater, who helped me feed my ballot into the machine.

“Thank you so much for coming in and voting,” she told me sincerely on my way out the door. “Thank YOU for taking time off your day to volunteer,” I responded. Another volunteer held the door for me on my way out, encouraging me to tell my husband/boyfriend/friends/grandma to come on in and vote, now!
