On Tuesday, a $20,000 diamond was stolen from Cherry Creek Shopping Center’s Zales outlet in a crime caught on camera.

First reaction: Why does a Zales have a $20,000 diamond? In case one of Denver’s “many” hip-hop stars needs a new bauble for his cane? Second reaction: Given how lax the security looks in footage below, it’s amazing this doesn’t happen daily.

That’s the question Channel 31 staffers seem itching to ask in their report, which features the aforementioned video images. Check it out below the Denver Police Department release on the incident:

On July 6, 2010, at approximately 4:30 p.m. a male party entered a jewelry store located inside the Cherry Creek Mall. Once inside the man asked to see a loose Marquis Diamond valued at approximately $20,000.00. The suspect briefly examined the diamond and ran from the store taking the diamond. He was observed getting into a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Colorado license plate number # 002LAT. The plate lists to an address in Pueblo, Colorado. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, between 22 and 29 years old, 5’10”, approximately 180 pounds, heavy build, short brown hair, and brown eyes. The suspect is described as wearing a white t-shirt, black jean pants and athletic shoes.
