Colorado Blows Past 400 Active COVID-19 Outbreaks

For the second consecutive week, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has added more than ninety new listings to its roster of COVID-19 outbreaks in the state. That brings the number of outbreaks being actively investigated by the agency to above 400, more than triple the total two months ago.

On July 28, the CDPHE counted 121 active outbreaks. This week’s report, released on September 22, lists 415.

The number would be even higher had the department not raised the requirements for an outbreak declaration in early June. The previous standard called for two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers, attendees and other people connected to a specific place within a fourteen-day period. Now, that rule only applies to residential health-care and correctional facilities. All other locations must be associated with at least five confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 over two weeks before an outbreak is designated.

There are 93 new or tweaked entries on the state health department’s September 22 report, down slightly from the 96 on September 15, as noted in our last outbreaks roundup. And once again, this amount is dominated by two categories: K-12 schools and health-care facilities.

The latest survey boasts 35 new or tweaked outbreaks at K-12 schools; that’s a decrease from the 47 on September 15. Many of the latest outbreaks are associated with rural counties (at least thirteen qualify) or places where in-school masking has stirred controversy: four in Weld County, three in Arapahoe and Jefferson counties, two in Douglas and Mesa counties. And that sum doesn’t include outbreaks at five child-care centers.

Meanwhile, outbreaks at health-care facilities rose from 34 on September 15 to 37 on September 22. That total includes 33 centers specializing in senior care, among them El Paso County’s MorningStar at Bear Creek, which has already suffered a resident death.

Other outbreaks of note include two automobile dealerships, a Pizza Hut in Craig, and the University of Northern Colorado football team.
