Throughout history, men have muttered a multitude of cheesy lines in attempts to lure women into bed. On their latest album, Spark the Revival, members of the Alan Baird Project seem to have gathered as many of these lines as they could and put them to music. With a sound that falls somewhere between mainstream pop bands like Train and indie-pop bands like Something Corporate, the outfit shamelessly offers up lines like “I’m sorry I’m not the man of your dreams, but I can show you places you’ve never seen” with complete earnestness. Although the lyrics are nauseatingly sincere, musically the members of the Alan Baird Project are notably talented. Propelled by a very solid rhythm section, the material is elevated by inventive guitar lines and vocals that come across as believably passionate despite the treacly nature of the overall narrative.
