In the realm of local art terrorism, Tom Nelsen is probably not a name that springs immediately to mind. You wouldn’t necessarily expect Nelsen, who organizes the garage-rock-lo-fi-oriented Hullaballoo festival, to have weirdo experimental music coming from his brain. But this is also the guy who drummed for the performance-art/psychedelic-rock band Dan Kaufman’s Superstar Eruption and the surrealistic garage outfit Vicious Women. Watch the video Nelsen made for his disturbing song “Laughing Pig” and marvel at how he basically doubled down on the warped factor in making that masterpiece. His latest project, Sense From Nonsense (due at 770 East 51st Avenue on Wednesday, April 17) rarely plays out live, but when it does, it is always different, interesting and compelling. He may even burn a guitar after engaging in some sonic abuse.
