When DB moved to the Big Apple in 1989, the Brit transplant essentially brought underground-dance and rave culture with him. As co-founder of the infamous NASA parties (some of the first rave parties on American soil), DB established himself as a trailblazer in the scene by being among the first jocks in the States to play drum-and-bass. Since then, through his New York-based record shop Breakbeat Science and via his numerous labels — smile, F-111 and Higher Education — he’s gone on to become one of the movement’s key figureheads. In a scene overrun with angry beats and hard bass lines, the melodic and musical qualities of his live sets stand out for being smooth and unique. Catch DB this Saturday, May 14, at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom; he’ll be on hand to help the Roofless Family celebrate its ten-year anniversary.
