As a result, he’s carved out a sound that’s dense, clever and well-balanced — albeit a bit too busy at times for its own good. Juxtaposing sweet analog sweeps and strings with gurgling digital sizzle, van Doorn’s productions are distinctively his own. And as a DJ, his sense of pacing and mood-setting has earned him a well-deserved reputation. His free monthly mixes (available at www. sandervandoorn.com) spotlight sets that start off with a few quirky, attention-grabbing tracks before settling into driving floor-fillers. Although he leans toward the grittier side of progressive house and trance, he’s not afraid to indulge in the odd hands-in-the-air breakdown and build. Van Doorn is equally unafraid of mixing in tracks that allude to dub, IDM or abstract techno to keep things from stagnating.
