As you might have heard, Kool Herc (aka Clive Campbell), father of the breakbeat and master hip-hop visionary, was hospitalized over the weekend. Since news of his illness and subsequent trouble covering medical costs first dropped on DJ Premier’s blog, there has been an outpouring of support from the hip-hop community on many levels. The legendary DJ is now back at home, but he’s apparently going to require surgery and is not insured.
Here in Colorado, Mane Rok and Dee Jay Tense will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from their show tomorrow (with Kenan Bell, Gavin, Dyalekt, Isolated Generation and Qbala) directly to the fund that will support the hip-hop legend.
“Whereas this is an everyday situation for millions of Americans, being that Kool Herc is the father of one of the United States’ only true cultural contributions to the world that has itself become a billion-dollar industry,” says Mane, “Dee Jay Tense and I know that it is both our duty and honor to give 100% of the proceeds received from our show tomorrow at the Curtis Street Bar — with Kenan Bell, Gavin, Dyalekt, Isolated Generation and Qbala — to Kool Herc.
