Many bands pare things down for unvarnished, uncluttered songwriting. The five members of Hindershot (due Friday, July 8, at 3 Kings Tavern) seem to have decided to go in the other direction — except that their songs never seem cluttered so much as richly imagined and executed. These guys could be considered a pop band in the vein of Mercury Rev or Another Green World-era Brian Eno; they’ve fully developed the use of electronic sounds and, at times, elements of noise composition. And even as the songs take on a melancholy tone, Hindershot seems to embody an active resistance to despair on stage, with the five players thrashing about in unison while, paradoxically, looking and sounding like they’re pulling the music apart. The band’s new seven-inch, while not as frantic, is just as compelling.
