Today, Wichita. Tomorrow, the world.

Smashburger — with its secret process that creates what Jason Sheehan called “meat candy” — has been a smash since the Colorado-based concept opened its first restaurant at 1120 South Colorado Boulevard two years ago.Since then, the owners have opened six more spots along the Front Range, most recently in Quebec Square at 7305 East 35th Avenue, with another slated to get the grill going at 104th and Federal any day.

But first, Kansas is getting smashed by the first-out-of-state Smashburger, which opens today in Wichita. And Houston is supposed to get a Smashburger this month, too. The company that Jason Sheehan named the Best Locally Based Chain in the Best of Denver 2008, whose corporate promise is to create “the best burgers you ever tasted,” is getting ready to go global.

With a reported $15 million investment fund (and some out-of-state partnerships), Smashburger plans to continue adding restaurants, with a goal of as many as sixty stores by the end of 2009. For more on the company, go to www.mysmashburger.com.
