For thirteen years, Martine Chavez has been turning out baked goods in a windowless space behind Turin Bicycles, Lenny’s Sub Shop and an MMJ dispensary. But at least she now has a door: Martines Bake Shop has opened down an alley at 700 Lincoln Street. The hours are limited — weekday mornings from 7 to 10:30 a.m. — and the shop isn’t the prettiest, but the baked goods are lovely.
Besides, since Chavez focuses on commercial production for places like Sunflower Market and Vitamin Cottage, she’s working through the night. “By the time we close, I’ve already been here for twelve hours,” she jokes.
There are a few seats outside, but with alley views and no tables, Martines is definitely a grab-and-go place. It also only accepts cash and checks.
The flavors of scones, cookies, muffins and breakfast burritos change daily; there are always sugar-free and gluten-free options, too. Chavez has a notebook that contains more than 200 flavor combinations she rotates through, including green tea with ginger and apricot with honey and vanilla. She also does the classics, such as red velvet — though she throws cherries into her batter.
