The GrowHaus is a community garden, market and education center in Elyria-Swansea that’s encouraging healthy eating and creating local jobs in the process, too. It is also one of ten nonprofits contending for Maxwell House’s Drops of Good contest that will award five organizations $50,000 each.
And the GrowHaus needs your help to win.
The winners will be decided by votes cast on the Maxwell House site; voting is open until June 17. But as of 4 p.m. today, the GrowHaus had fallen out of the big money and was in sixth place.
Fortunately, by making the top ten, the GrowHaus has already won $5,000 — and you can vote for it once a day until the contest deadline to help it win the big bucks.

The GrowHaus is a “resource for the community to tap into the creative energy that’s already here,” says Executive Director Coby Gould. Currently, the space produces fish that it sells to SAME Cafe, a restaurant that serves healthy, organic food on a pay-what-you-want basis. This spring, it also sold seedlings and gave away produce to locals who are living in one of Denver’s largest food deserts.
A community farm stand should open in the next month, Gould says, adding that he hopes to eventually grow enough to sell local, organic produce to Denver restaurants.
