Wolfgang, the first beer that Great Divide tested and brewed on its now-six-month-old pilot brewing system, will hit liquor-store shelves in Colorado this week and elsewhere over the next month.

The German-style dopplebock is based on the hefty, malt-forward lagers that German monks used to sustain themselves through long periods of fasting, the brewery says. Like “liquid bread,” it has “heavenly notes of caramel, dark fruit and toffee balanced by a subtle hop character.”

The 8 percent ABV Wolfgang, which is already available on draft and in bottles in Great Divide’s tap room, will be sold in 22-ounce bottles and five-gallon kegs. It replaces Smoked Baltic Porter in the brewery’s seasonal lineup.

Wolfgang will be featured at Great Divide’s 18th Anniversary Party, which takes place on Saturday (tickets, $25, are available here), along with several other rare beers that were brewed on the seven-barrel pilot system. The brewery bought the system in December so its brewers could experiment with new recipes.
