Last year I added another day to my list of favorite unofficial holidays. Before 2008, my list was as follows:
Opening day of the Rockies, St. Patrick’s Day, July 4th, New Orleans Jazz Fest, Halloween, Stock Show, Talk Like a Pirate Day, the first day of skiing and New Year’s Day. Then I discovered the Fire Fighters Chili Cook Off on Larimer Square, which quickly became an integral part of the list.
Who knew a few hours over a Friday lunch could be so much fun? Beer, firefighters and chili? The combination was a no-brainer. And I’m lucky enough to be a judge at this year’s event — the 22nd annual — which will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, October 9, in Larimer Square. Firefighters from around the country will be selling their chili; those proceeds benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Colorado.
Additionally, the hot boys (and girl) from the 2010 Colorado Firefighter Calendar will be on hand to sign calendars — and those sales benefit the Children’s Hospital Burn Center.
