Q:Where can I get good chicken and dumplings?

A:Good question! After contacting fifteen likely candidates, the closest I could come to finding chicken and dumplings was the Rocky Mountain Diner (800 18th Street, 303-293-8383), where an employee told me: “I’ve been here for two years, and in that time, we had them on the specials menu once that I can remember.”

Not even Ethel’s House of Soul (2622 Welton Street, 303-295-2125), which specializes in down-homey, Southern dishes — pig’s feet with cornbread and greens, for instance — offers chicken and dumplings. “You have to make those to order,” owner Ethel Allen explained. “And you don’t want to be dealing with that during a busy time.”

If any local restaurant is willing to deal with that, inquiring minds — and stomachs eager to take on big wads of dough over creamed chicken — want to know.
