The power our phones have over us is scary. We stare at them constantly. They contain huge amounts of sensitive, personal data. They can be used to track us. It’s not much of a stretch to imagine them taking things a step further and becoming downright deadly. That’s the premise of App, a new horror film that imagines the darkest possible side of the ubiquitous technology. In the film, after you’ve got the app, you’re not long for this world.
“Once your phone gets it, because we’re so entwined with our phones, you’ve got it,” says Ernie Quiroz, programming manager for the Denver Film Society. “Once your phone is infected, you’re infected.”
To help make the horrifying premise all the more real, the movie is paired with — you guessed it — a dedicated app, designed to sync with the film. As the movie plays, you’ll get access to alternate perspectives, off-screen action and more, all designed to pull you deeper into the story.
“It’s not 100 percent necessary to enjoy the film, but it’s there, and it’s another layer to add to the film,” Quiroz explains. “It’s not like walking into a 3-D movie without glasses and being left with a headache and wondering what the hell is going on.”
