The Henry Awards, named for longtime and much-loved theater impresario Henry Lowenstein, are organized by the Colorado Theatre Guild and given annually for excellence in theater. Colorado’s version of the Tonys, the Henrys are presented at a gala that also serves as a fundraiser for the guild and is attended by throngs of our starriest and most talented theater artists.

The guild is a statewide organization, but in the past, awards have gone primarily to metro-area work. That is changing. “It’s been one of the biggest challenges for us,” says general manager Gloria Shanstrom, “getting applications and approving them from interested judges around the state. That took the better part of a year. Now we’ve got eligible shows covered in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Summit County, Lake Dillon, Breckenridge, Creede and even Thunder River in Carbondale. We’re continuing to add judges in so that next year I can say all our member theater companies in the mountains are covered.

“We do have a vital scene,” she adds, “and if I had my druthers, everybody who works in theater in the entire state would get an award for the love, energy and passion they bring to their productions.”

The Henrys begin at 6 p.m. tonight, with cocktails and a silent auction preceding the 7 p.m. awards ceremony, at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada. Admission is $23 to $50; reserve tickets by calling 720-898-7200 or go to coloradothea-treguild.org.
