Ballet is already kind of campy, with its large, sweeping movements expressing overweening emotion. But what happens when you take fifteen male dancers — chock-full of skill and mastery of difficult ballet technique — and infuse their performance with glee, fun, hilarity and just the right amount of naughtiness?
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, that’s what. Tonight in Macky Auditorium on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus, the male drag masters will perform their signature “Swan Lake,” “Majismas” and more. Their joy in playing traditionally female parts is obvious, and they get extra kudos for such feats as dancing en pointe. How many men do you know who can do that?
The performance starts tonight at 7:30 p.m. (with a free pre-concert lecture at 6:45) as part of CU’s Artist Series; tickets are $12 to $52. Information and tickets are available at 303-492-8008 or www.cuconcerts.org. The Trockaderos dance again tomorrow night at 7:30 at the University of Denver’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts; call 303-357-ARTS.
