Remember those awesome commercials in the ’80s for Barbizon, the school where you could train to be a model, or just look like one? Well, Bettina May brings her version to Beauty Bar at 3 p.m. this afternoon, with a program that goes way beyond the model “look.” In fact, the professional pin-up brings it much farther back with lessons on how to get that mid-century modern style made famous by Vargas’ drawings and Bettie Page spreads. Fittingly, it will be followed by a burlesque show.
As a jack of all beauty trades, Bettina May will give a six-hour instructional on how to do your own hair and make-up — and even aid in picking flattering and vintage-looking outfits from your own wardrobe — before capping off the class with a pin-up photo shoot. The images she captures are yours to keep, along with a book and CD of materials to guide you on your own transformational pin-up journey.
The class is $200 for the instruction and shoot package, or just $50 to observe. A $25 deposit is required and can be made (along with registration) at www.pinupclass.com. All participants will also gain free entry to the after-party at Beauty Bar at 10 p.m., which will feature a burlesque show with performances by May herself, and local dancers like Cora Vette, Lo-Lo Flamingo and more.
