Snowboarder Jeremy Jones is bringing the harrowing second installment in his Deeper, Further, Higher film trilogy to the Oriental Theater tonight and to the Boulder Theater tomorrow night as part of the run-up to the season.
“The most terrifying moment making this film was when I was hiking a face with Mitch Toelderer and Bibi Pekarek and I turned around and they were gone; they’d been taken out by an avalanche,” Jones says. “Seeing your friends there one minute and gone the next and not knowing if they’re all right is one of the worst feelings in the world. It’s a serving of humble pie, and it does make you question what we’re doing out there.”
Jones and friends got as far-flung as possible for Further, seeking out big-mountain lines in Japan, Norway, Austria, Alaska and California’s Sierra Mountains in a high-stakes human-powered pursuit that found them eschewing mountain resorts and helicopters in favor of backcountry hiking, skinning up peaks on split-boards and camping out in subzero conditions.
The film screens tonight at the Oriental, 4335 West 44th Avenue at 6:30 p.m. ($13, all-ages) and Friday at 7 p.m. (all-ages) and 9:30 p.m. (21+) at the Boulder Theater ($13 advance, $16 day of show), 2032 14th Street in Boulder.
