If you haven’t already entered your prized eggplant or handmade quilt (because, hey, not all of us garden) in the Denver County Fair, you’ve been given a reprieve: The fair has extended its online competition entry deadline to July 31. Do you make the world’s tastiest apple pie? Do you use your own organically grown apples to make it, and serve it with a side of homemade goat cheese that you made yourself using milk from the goat you raised in your own back yard? The Denver County Fair is looking for you, on multiple levels. The fair’s second incarnation features dozens of competitions — in categories traditional, off-the-wall and totally Denver-centric — that are now officially open for registration.

A shortlist of “best” contest categories, of which there are too many to name here, includes: tomatoes, container gardens, garden transformation, bee hives, sewing, fly-tying, canned goods, homebrews, wines, cheeses, fruit pies, several categories of artwork, original comic books, chickens, goats, house pets…ad infinitum. New this year at the fair will be the Geek Pavilion, with its own nerdist set of competitions, covering everything from from robot wars to fantasy art, and Sunday’s Viva Denver! theme, which will feature chihuahua parades and taco contests.
Yes, that’s the short list. Very short. You’ll have to visit the Denver County Fair website for the rest, as well as details on how to apply. Extra plus: $1 of every registration fee will go to a favorite charity of the sponsoring pavilion.The fair runs August 10 through 12 at the National Western Complex.
