Chris Loffelmacher, the witty and wicked Fresh City Life programmer at the Denver Public Library, always infuses his productions with both fun and drama, but Frock Out 2010: Sideshow will be totally over the top — the Big Top, that is. This year’s local fashion-design showcase and fundraiser has a sideshow theme that Loffelmacher and fellow event planner Tran Wills are playing to the hilt.
“It’s going to be a cultural Noah’s Ark,” Loffelmacher says. “From beginning to end, you’ll feel like you’re at the parade leading up to the circus. It’s going to be old-school, with that working-out-of-a-trunk-in-whatever-city-you’re-in feeling about it. We’re going to have a real old-time sideshow: We have a bearded lady, we have a giant, we have a fat guy — he’s a big boy — who calls himself Sexy Man and acts like he’s the hottest thing on two legs, and we have a classic muscle man with the barbells.”
There will also be models walking the runway, of course, showing off the fashions by eleven top-notch local designers, as well as the Immundo burlesque troupe with diva Cora Vette; members of the Denver Roller Dolls; and drag queens and other surprise guests — and local fashion celebrity Mondo Guerra will be judging the show. “It’s going to be a spectacle,” Loffelmacher promises. “I want this to be the most spectacular fashion show ever, so I can retire from ever doing another one.”
Let’s hope not. But either way, you won’t want to miss this Frock Out, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Denver Central Library’s grand Schlessman Hall, 10 West 14th Avenue Parkway. Tickets range from $10 to $100; reserve your spot at dplfriends.org/events/frockout.html or by calling 720-865-2051.
