Small could just be another way of saying “affordable” where artworks are concerned, but in the case of WEE: A Small Works Photo Show, which opens today at FLASH, A Working With Artists space in Belmar, gallery spokeswoman Valerie Photogoddess thinks there’s more to it. “Small images are asking something differ-ent of the viewer,” she says. “They ask you to get closer to the subject.” Oh, and there’s also that affordable thing: The sheer variety of the show’s photo-based images, from more classical figure work and landscapes to Katie Taft’s shots of strange creatures, will be enticing to shoppers, as will their prices, which range from $50 to $250.
There’s also a serendipitous bonus if you buy: “The neat thing about a show geared toward holiday shoppers is the idea of giving fine art as a gift,” Photogoddess notes. And for doing so, she adds, you’ll get your due. “We’ll take a Polaroid of you holding the photo and put it up in the empty space, so there’ll be a new wee photo of you where the other wee photo once hung.” Your name in lights, baby.
Attend a reception for WEE tonight at FLASH, 445 South Saulsbury Street in Lakewood, from 6 to 9 p.m.; make a day of it and shop the rest of Block 7 and Belmar, too. The show continues through January 4; visit www.workingwithartists.org or call 303-742-7528.
