In conjunction with Defaced, its exhibition on contemporary Romanian painters, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art sought to connect visitors with Colorado’s own vibrant Romanian community. The result is today’s celebration of Great Union Day, a Romanian holiday marking both the unification of Romanian provinces after Soviet occupation and the 1918 union of Transylvania.
But BMoCA wanted to look at more than just history, and so organizers decided to bring people together for a fun, family-friendly soirée. “I think it’s really easy for us to focus on the troubled history of Romania — the revolution, Communism, oppression — but there is so much more, and it is such a rich culture that has connections to the rest of the world,” says Nicole Dial-Kay, education coordinator at the museum.
Traditional Romanian cuisine will be provided by Radu Alina Stroia as visitors are treated to collaborative performances from the Doina Romanian Folk Choir and the Balkanika Dancers. Adults will have the opportunity to taste a uniquely Romanian plum spirit, Tuica, and children can sample cozonac, a regional sweet bread.
Celebrate Great Union Day today at BMoCA, 1750 East 13th Street in Boulder. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door. For more information, visit bmoca.org or call 303-443-2122.
