Again this year, Starz Denver Film Festival artistic director Brit Withey is offering his must-see picks for each day of the fest — including many flicks that movie lovers might otherwise miss amid the flood of silver-screen goodies. Today, Withey recommends Gene Kelly: The Legacy.

Assembled by Patricia Ward Kelly, Gene Kelly’s widow, “the show features clips of all sorts of film work he did throughout his life — and in between them, she tells all sorts of stories about him, and her time with him. And she brings all these props and things from his film career. So it’s part stage show, part film that runs just shy of two hours.”
This combination of elements made Withey a bit nervous. “Sometimes when you talk to people in this kind of scenario, you get the feeling that things could go wrong in a million different ways,” he concedes. But a phone conversation with Ward Kelly, whose background is as a writer and biographer, set his mind at ease.
“She was great — really lovely to talk to,” he notes. “And I think she’s going to offer us a really fun look back at a beloved performer. I’m really looking forward to this one.”
