The Stanley Film Festival is back for its second year, with no sign of sophomore slump. The fest, which takes place at the historic Stanley Hotel, kicks off with the Colorado premiere of Alexandre Philippe’s Doc of the Dead, a comprehensive look at the zombie phenomenon in pop culture, and closes Sunday with the horror comedy What We Do in the Shadows, featuring the talents of Flight of the Conchords co-star Jermaine Clement. In between, a slate of new movies from luminaries such as Ti West, Takashi Miike and Nacho Vigalondo will be accompanied by horror classics including Who Can Kill a Child and Gremlins. And if you need a rest from all the on-screen mayhem, there’s an immersive horror game, a radio drama written especially for the fest, a zombie walk and more.
“I think if you’re doing a horror fest at a haunted hotel, you’re missing a big opportunity if you don’t take advantage of the space to put in a bunch of secrets and rewards for those who go exploring,” says programming director Landon Zakheim.
Doc of the Dead screens tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Stanley, 333 East Wonderview Avenue in Estes Park. Festival tickets start at $11 ($10 for Denver Film Society members) for individual screenings, with a variety of passes available. For tickets and more information, visit stanleyfilmfest.com.
