Some rock docs work because they document an important part of musical history. Some work because they tell a compelling, unique story. And some work just because their subjects are so completely and totally unhinged that you can’t look away. When all three come together, as they do in the Ginger Baker biopic Beware of Mr. Baker, you have something special.
“Mainly, it’s just a fun ride. The guy is frigging nuts. You’re dealing with a guy who’s been married four times, had a career in six bands and was one of the most megalomaniacal, crazy motherfuckers out there,” says Pablo Kjolseth, executive director of the University of Colorado’s International Film Series. “It’s never less than gripping, for sure.”
The film includes stories from rock royalty like Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and Neal Peart, alongside Baker’s ex-wives, children and the man himself, who lived in Parker, Colorado, in the 1990s. It’s a must-see not just for fans of Baker’s work, which spanned everything from Cream to Public Image Ltd, but for anyone who can enjoy seeing the spectacle of rock excess embodied as still-vital septua-genarian.
