Improv and geek culture collides in Geek Out, a show that uses the obsessive nature of fandom as inspiration and fuel for improv. “It’s a combination of all the things we love. We’re an improv theater. We’re a bunch of geeks,” explains Denise Maes, the show’s executive producer. “We thought, why not marry these worlds and make ketchup? Ketchup is tomato and sugar, but when you put them together, they’re this amazing, unique thing. That’s what this is.”
It starts with an expert on some geeky corner of pop culture, from Star Wars to Saved by the Bell. That person gets interviewed on stage about their fandom, and then the players take those nuggets of information and use them as a basis for their improv, creating stories, characters and jokes based on what they’ve just learned. When they tackle Lord of the Rings this week, you might get anything from an Ent musical to a dramatic reenactment of Legolas on a pub crawl, depending on what esoteric aspect of Middle-Earth catches their fancy.
See the show at 8 p.m. tonight and every Saturday through February 15 at Bovine Metropolis Theater, 1527 Champa Street; topics change each week. Tickets are $14 in advance, $16 at the door. For tickets and more information, visit bovinemetropo-lis.com.
