There are many good reasons to miss being in school: summer vacation, lunch breaks with friends and even those occasional classes with inspirational teachers. But no one in his right mind misses homework. Rest assured that Buntport Theater’s Teacher’s Pet series, which takes place every other month and does include homework, won’t require hours of preparation and won’t involve papier-mâché, posterboard or book reports. Unless, of course, you’re into that kind of thing.
“It’s an open-mike night with homework,” explains Buntport’s Brian Colonna. Tonight’s Teacher’s Pet, “Letters Never Sent/Letters to Santa,” is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Participants can bring old letters they never sent or letters to Santa, or they can create something specifically for this show-and-tell offshoot. “You get this strange thing based on what people that night are willing to talk about,” Colonna says. A hall monitor is picked from the audience to judge participants by applause; the overall winner receives “a humble prize,” according to Colonna.
And don’t feel boxed in by the theme. “The quality of the performances are great, because it’s that awkward thing that happens when you get up to share in front of a bunch of strangers,” Colonna continues. “People dance sometimes; lip-synching happens. It’s not just artifact-based.”
