For Terry Dodd, who’s currently directing A Steady Rain for the Edge Theatre Company, news of the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, is resonant. The play “begins and ends with a gunshot,” he says, and places the audience in “a cop car doing ninety down an alley at night in the rain. It’s about Chicago, racial profiling, starting out to do the good thing and in the end not doing the good thing. It’s fractured. You’re taken into the world of being a cop, which still stands under that motto, ‘to protect and serve.’

“Being a cop has power,” adds Dodd. “I talked to a cop last week, and he said people have a healthy fear of cops, and that’s a good thing. A cop pulls behind you, and you think, ‘what did I do?’ My dad was a cop. I grew up with a gun in the house, with that power and all – the use and abuse of it. I don’t know any other job with more risk involvement; the suicide rate is high.

“All those things are interwoven in the play. It’s powerfully written, a classic tragedy. There’s an inevitability of action in the beginning. There’s also dark humor. Gallows humor. It has to be there, or we couldn’t take the ride.”

A Steady Rain opens tonight at 8 p.m. at Edge, 1560 Teller Street in Lakewood, for a run through September 26. For tickets, $24 to $26, go to theedgetheater.com or call 303-232-0363.
