Please Stop Calling My House, a new group show opening tomorrow at IndyInk, is all about love — or what happens when the idea of love and the reality of love mix. “A couple of years ago we did a Valentine’s Day show that was pretty similar to this one at Buffalo Exchange that was organized by Molly Bounds — the idea was to do a group show based on more realistic interpretations of love and relationships,” says participating artist Jazzmyn Barbosa. That show went well, and so IndyInk, an art gallery/retail spot also on Broadway, invited Bounds to curate a similar show around Valentine’s Day this year.

The result is a collection of prints featuring work from Bounds, Barbosa, Kat Salvaggio and Barbosa’s sister, Taylor Barbosa. The print show will be accompanied by a zine of corresponding work, all connected by the simple theme of love and relationships. Compared with the previous show, Barbosa says, there’s a new element of emotional maturity happening within the pieces. “This time around we are taking a different stance on the theme — like, we’re not doing work about who were dating at the time, which kind of happened last time,” Barbosa says with a laugh. “It’s more broad and hopefully a little bit more of a mature look at intimacy — Molly’s work is especially good at looking at time passing and how we might look at a relationship at the time it is happening and then retrospectively.” The title of the show, Please Stop Calling My House, is also a modern take on what can transpire in relationships — with an emphasis on the female perspective. “(Molly and I) had originally come up with the title for our senior thesis show — but we decided it was a little too intense,” says Barbosa. “But we thought we should use it for this show about love, because it kind of goes along with this idea of a real look at relationships. Like, sometimes relationships do end messy and sometimes it can be bitter and weird.” Please Stop Calling My House opens Friday, February 6, with a reception from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at IndyInk.
