You might be familiar with Barr Lake State Park’s monthly full-moon hikes, but did you know that once a year, the park also hosts a Solstice Moon Hike? Bundle up on the shortest day of the year for this short hike (naturalist Larry Zanetell says it’s about two and a half miles) and listen to Zanetell and fellow naturalist D.J. discuss the last-quarter solstice moon and how some Barr Lake animals have responded to the winter season.
“We do bring a scope, so hopefully we’ll see owls along the way, and some planets,” Zanetell says. “People enjoy it; we have had very cold hikes, but I think the response has been pretty good.” Take that warning for what it is and dress for the weather (meaning lots of layers!) so you can comfortably enjoy the program; you’ll warm up at the end with hot chocolate and cookies.
