I’ve always wanted a secretary, someone to whom I could dictate any and every thought that crosses my mind for documentation. And how cool would it be to dictate a letter to someone — especially someone important, like President Barack Obama?
Well, you don’t need to hire a fast typist with good organizational skills to do that. Instead, you can stop by the Boulder Bookstore, 1107 Pearl Street, between noon and 4 p.m. today. There, you’ll find Boulder-based artist Ashley Mask Harris, complete with typewriter and portable office space, taking down letters to Obama from passersby as part of her viewer-participatory work, Dear Mr. President. After you sign your letter, it will be placed in an envelope addressed to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. — and at the end of the day, Harris will mail every last one. Harris has compatriots across the nation — in Seattle, Memphis and Birmingham, Alabama — who will be “performing” Dear Mr. President simultaneously, creating a web of thoughts, opinions and ideas.
Dear Mr. President is not affiliated with any political party, so people of all political stripes are invited to participate and leave their stamp on this project.
