The Stanley Hotel, the historic and supposedly haunted lodge in Estes Park that inspired Stephen King’s The Shining, has always embraced its association with the chilling story, even if it wasn’t actually used as the set for the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film of the same name. So there’s no creepier setting for a brand-new horror film festival.
But you don’t have to drive to Estes Park to attend the Stanley Film Festival Kick-Off Party, which will offer free food, music, drinks and a sneak peek at the lineup and guests of the fest, running May 2 through 5. (The official schedule will be released on April 1.) The party also presents an early opportunity to buy tickets and merchandise.
And it wouldn’t be a horror-fest launch party without a scary movie — although the exact title is still a mystery. “It’s a new horror film — we’re in the process of locking up the title — but it’s going to be a great movie,” promises festival director Jenny Bloom.
The party starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Sie FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, and the movie begins at 7; admission is free. For more information, visit facebook.com/StanleyFilmFest.
