The holiday season will get a lot darker tonight when proto-slasher Black Christmas hits town as part of the A.V. Club’s New Cult Canon tour. The influential horror classic will be introduced by A.V. Club contributor and local author Jason Heller, a longtime fan of the film.
“Like a lot of people, I didn’t see Black Christmas until after I saw most of the more popular movies it inspired: Halloween, Friday the 13th, Scream,” Heller explains. “To me, it’s like you listen to punk rock, and then the first time you go back and hear the Stooges or the MC5, you’re like, ‘Oh, wow, this is where it all came from!’ It’s such a great, pivotal film that’s kind of on the cusp of old-school thrillers and the gorier slasher genre that was starting to come up at the time.”
