Elitch Gardens Historic Theatre is bringing back its Film on Fridays series this year, beginning tonight with Forbidden Planet, starring Walter Pidgeon, who performed on the Elitch Gardens stage in Take Her, She’s Mine, back in 1964.

“All of our films feature Elitch stars in some of their best movie roles,” says Film on Fridays coordinator Thomas Delapa. “Not too many Denverites know that the divine — but then unknown — Grace Kelly lived in Denver for the summer in 1951, when she was a minor Elitch player. She lived in the Highlands neighborhood and used to bike to the theater.”

In addition, the famed Trocadero Ballroom, Denver’s hottest dance floor, was once located on what is now the lawn where the film series takes place, he adds. “Duke Ellington’s and Les Brown’s big bands used to swing it there, among many others.”

Along with the movie and live music afterward from Cora Vette and her Chop Shop Band, there will be food trucks, prizes and a sci-fi costume contest. Seating begins at 7 p.m. on the lawn at 4655 West 37th Avenue. Tickets are $5 (or free for members and children under fourteen), and proceeds will go toward theater renovations.
