The intersection of craft and art is where you’ll find the Ladies Fancywork Society. The artist collective, made up of mostly anonymous members, turns traditional crafting techniques such as knitting and needlework into full-on guerrilla art. Exhibit A: the short-lived ball and chain the group famously added to the Big Blue Bear in April 2011. Now, MCA Denver has invited the Ladies to fancy up their front door, legitimately, with the “Fancygasm” installation.
“During the wintertime, with our sliding front door, it gets really cold at our front desk and entryway,” says Nora Burnett Abrams, associate curator at the museum. “So our director invited the ladies to come up with…something that would basically function as a way to absorb some of the wind [and]…create sort of an interesting, dynamic and beautiful installation that would be just a wonderful unexpected surprise for visitors.”
What exactly will that look like? “It’s going to be something that has a wintry feel to it, but also something that will delight and enchant our visitors and set a wonderful tone for what they will experience once they make it through the front door,” Abrams says.
