Between the Meatless Monday movement and endless PETA campaigns, plant-based diets have more presence in the collective consciousness than ever before. And the 2011 VegFest will celebrate all things vegetarian and vegan, with speakers, cooking demonstrations, food samples, vendors, kids’ activities, a farmers’ market and much more. Colleen Goudreau, one of the day’s speakers, says carnivores need not be afraid. All you need to enjoy VegFest and talks like hers are an open mind and a willingness to consider the information shared.

“Start where you’re at,” she advises. “If you think you can give up everything except ‘X,’ give up everything except ‘X’. The problem is, a lot of people think if they can’t do everything, they won’t do anything. Just do something, anything.

“I ask people not to live according to my values, but their values,” she adds. “Most people are moved to not want to create harm, but where they get really tripped up is in the how.”

Goudreau and many others will be there to help with the how, whether you’re a full-fledged vegan or a beginning Meatless Monday devotee.

VegFest runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 West Sixth Avenue in Golden; admission is $10, and kids ages seventeen and younger get in free. Visit http://vegetariansocietyofcolorado.org/2011_VegFest_Colorado.html.

Sat., July 2, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., 2011
