Eating in the dark might be a recent trend, but jumping on a bandwagon was the last thing on Greg Goldfogel’s mind when the Alto owner conceptualized tonight’s Wine Dinner in the Dark. “I’ve got a longstanding relationship with a guy named Nicholas Delmonico, who is a blind gentleman and the co-sponsor of the event,” Goldfogel explains. “He’s been coming to the restaurant since the day we opened, a huge music fan, and the kind of person you couldn’t say no to if you tried.”

So Goldfogel got wine gurus Mark and Janice Mondavi on board to choose the wine menu for the dinner. “Mondavi hand-picked the wines himself,” Goldfogel says. “He picked amazing wines, by the way — wines that are very expensive retail.” Alto chef Michael Farrell created a menu around Mondavi’s wines, and the result is tonight’s dinner.

The room will be dimmed and blindfolds offered to patrons who want to go all the way, but eating completely in the dark is entirely optional.

The dinner is $100 per person ($75 for blind or visually impaired guests), with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the American Council of the Blind in Colorado. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. at the restaurant, 1320 15th Street; visit www.altodenver.com or call 303-893-ALTO to book your spot.
