Describing The Portal, a multimedia rock concert, isn’t simple. There are three live performers: a vocalist, a hand drummer and a guitarist. There’s a video and there’s a soundtrack. There is a lighting-and-projection system. And all of these elements play together in harmony to create the experience. “It’s all very intricate and well put together,” says creator Luke Comer. “Rock bands and raves have used lighting and projection to augment their shows, but I really don’t know anybody who’s done it where it’s so carefully synced to create one unified experience.”
The Portal follows an age-old script of a journey, seeking and finding elements we didn’t know we were missing. “This was ultimately designed to follow many of the elements of a shamanic journey,” Comer notes. But don’t let yourself be scared off if that doesn’t ring your bell; you can relate to the experience on a psychological level instead of a spiritual one, or just let the images and sounds wash over you and then take from it what you will. Previous attendees have described it as “psychedelic,” “mind-clearing,” “fascinating,” “a black hole,” “eye-opening” and “unlike any show I’ve ever seen.”
