It’s not uncommon to see throngs of people, faces painted and food in hand, parading into cemeteries on November 1 and 2. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a two-day holiday that originated in Mexico, honors the dead through festivals and celebrations. It is believed that the dead are “awakened” during this time and join their loved ones for the festivities.
This year, the Denver Botanic Gardens brings the Mexican tradition to town with the Calavera Ball. DBG spokeswoman Yvonne Garcia calls the interactive cocktail party the “first of its kind. We wanted to create an event that is centered around all things Día de los Muertos,” Garcia explains, adding that the ball is named after the iconic Day of the Dead skull symbol. “The ball will feature costume contests, altar displays and piñatas as seen during Día de los Muertos.”
There will also be a silent auction benefiting Cole Arts and Science Academy. Guests are encouraged to dress as Catrin or Catrina, the elegant skeletons associated with Day of the Dead.
The ball begins tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Denver Botanic Gardens, 1007 York Street; general-admission tickets (VIP is sold out) are available for $60 at botanicgardens.org.
