The Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art will stick its toes in new waters tonight when poets from Denver’s Lighthouse Writers Workshop drop in to read original poetry written in response to selected works in the venue’s current exhibit, Colorado Abstraction: Paintings and Sculpture. The poets, including Dee Casalaina, James Frey, Ginny Hoyle, Andrea Moore, Barbara Sorensen and Roger Wehling, were given free run of the galleries in order to select and study the abstract works that most inspired them; they’ll recite their finished verses to attendees from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
“It’s just been like a snowball picking up steam,” says Kirkland Public Programs Coordinator Mary Beth Orr of the idea for the event, adding that she hopes this evening will serve as a launching point for additional events in the future designed to draw in crowds beyond the museum’s membership and usual visitors to openings.
