Shawn Sheehy has been creating pop-up cards and books for years, and after he moved into his first-ever house (and spent a summer gardening in his new yard), he was inspired to create Pop-Up Wildflowers, a curriculum focusing on everything from accurate, three-dimensional pop-up renderings of flowers to botanical certification programs.

“Last April was the very first class that I did; I piloted it in Denver,” Sheehy remembers. “So I’m excited to come back this year; I’ve had a year of playing around, tweaking it.”

This years classes include a beginner-level workshop that runs today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Denver Botanic Gardens, 1007 York Street ($140 for members and $170 for non-members); that will be followed by an advanced workshop April 19-21. You must have taken the beginner-level workshop, either last year or this year, to attend the advanced-level classes. “We’re basically going to make several different flowers, all native to North America, and they will mount into cards,” Sheehy explains. “In the second workshop, I;’m going to teach a binding, as well, to make all of those cards together into a single book. So it’ll be completely focused on taking a look at a couple of different kinds of structures and methods of building pop-ups that all can turn into interesting ways of making flower forms.”
