Denver comic Ben Roy is relentless. Since his first album, I Got Demons, was released last summer, Roy has performed countless shows with both his band and his comedy team, the Grawlix – which has received glowing reviews for its Amazon-produced pilot Those Who Can’t.
This week, Roy recorded a follow-up album at Comedy Works and talked about the differences between the two. “The first had raw energy and an aggressive feel,” he says. “It felt loud and blown out; that’s how I like the music I listen to. But I think that first album was a mix of material that I had created over the few years prior to its release. This new album will be stuff that I’ve been working on over the past year…. I want to use all this material up so that when I release an album every year or two, [it] has all been harvested from within that time frame.”
Coincidentally, fellow Grawlix members Adam Cayton-Holland and Andrew Orvedahl will also release solo albums this month, but Roy says comedy isn’t a competition. “I wouldn’t say I’m one step ahead of either of them in any manner. Maybe I’m working on a second album, but they’ve both accomplished things with their careers that I haven’t as of yet. We push each other, but I’m not trying to one-up them.”
